Maximizing the Collective Intelligence of a Network Using Novel Measures of Socio-Cognitive Diversity

Description: This project will explore the degree to which it is possible to augment “wisdom of crowd” effects by developing novel, theory-based measures of socio-cognitive diversity and using them to select smaller, smarter sub-crowds. Socio-cognitive diversity refers to differences in individuals’ prior beliefs and information sources, including information acquired through social interaction. We will consider the case of networked crowds in particular–that is, groups of communicating individuals who share information in the process of arriving at a judgment (for example, a group of military intelligence analysts who work together to predict the location of a high-value target). We focus on networks because (a) real-world analysis and decision-making typically involve some degree of collaboration; (b) communications among members (i.e., who said what to whom) constitute a rich data source from which measures of diversity can potentially be extracted using automated methods.

SCH: kHealth: Semantic Multisensory Mobile Approach to Personalized Asthma Care

Description: Asthma affects over 300 million people, claiming over 250,000 worldwide annually. Using low cost sensors and an intelligent mobile application, this unique research on personalized digital health will develop algorithms and techniques to empower patients and doctors by providing personalized, contextually-relevant, and actionable information synthesized from a comprehensive understanding of health-relevant data. The proposed research will uncover correlations among extracted sensor features, their relationship to the control and severity of asthma, and will personalize management of asthma. Kno.e.sis researchers will work with Dayton Children’s Hospital to carry out an extensive pilot with over 200 children with asthma.

CRII: CSR: Towards Understanding and Mitigating the Impact of Web Robot Traffic on Web Systems

Description: This CSR-CRII project responds to the sudden rise of Web robot (a.k.a. Web crawler) traffic on Web systems around the world - from approximately 20% of all requests a decade ago to over 60% today. This effort will synthesize our present understanding of robot traffic with machine learning tools, statistical analysis, and data science methods not previously considered in the context of Web traffic analysis and user behavioral modeling. It will improve our ability to understand the impact of robot traffic on Web systems by: (i) devising automatic methods to classify robots by their functionality and by the demands they impose; and (ii) develop novel robot traffic generators, tailored to a specific profile of robot types that can test how a system reacts to robot traffic of varying intensity and functional type mixtures.

Towards Geospatial Awareness from Wide-Area Aerial Surveillance

Description: Wide-area imagery (WAMI) sensors are systems able to capture high resolution visualizations of large areas at high resolution over time. Discoveries about the extraordinarily large area WAMI captures at moderate rates is limited by a lack of tools to automatically infer, detect, and learn about patterns of life in the monitored area. This project will address this concern by building software tools and analysis methods based on the theory of temporal networks to discover the positional, temporal, and dynamic characteristics of broad geographic region captured by WAMI to improve situational awareness. Whereas the current art focuses on inferring data about single target(s) of interest, this work will build models capturing the broad dynamics of an entire region.

Assessing the Reliability of Medical Information on Online Social Media

Description: Despite the fact that the factual reliability of information about medical problems, symptoms, and treatments is debatable, more and more people are turning to social media as a source of support and advice for managing their illness. To address this increasingly pressing problem, this research will explore methods to assess the reliability of medical information shared on social media. It will innovatively focus on the structure of a user’s relationships with other social media participants to predict the quality of the information shared. This collaborative effort between new faculty members in the School of Business and School of Engineering and Computer Science brings experts in Big Data analytics to carry out the work, establishing a cross-disciplinary research program.

EarthCube Building Blocks: GeoLink - Leveraging Semantics and Linked Data for Data Sharing and Discovery in the Geosciences

Description: The National Science Foundation's EarthCube program has set out to establish concepts and approaches to create integrated data infrastructures across the Geosciences. On of its key challenges is to enable and simplify data publishing, discovery, access, reuse, and integration in a sustainable way. Existing data repositories and networks must be linked, while retaining their independent missions and services to existing disciplinary communities. Cultural, conceptual, and infrastructural heterogeneities must be respected in order to maintain different perspectives, topics, granularities, and differing priorities and thus foster inclusivity in the EarthCube endeavor. In particular, individual choices made by providers of data or repositories will need to be respected in an inclusive manner, and approaches to integration must reflect this. At the same time, however, the diversity and heterogeneity of geoscience data presents a significant barrier to its discovery and reuse.

III: Small: TROn - Tractable Reasoning with Ontologies

Description: The Semantic Web is based on describing the meaning - or semantics - of data on the Web by means of metadata - data describing other data - in the form of ontologies. The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) has made several recommended standards for ontology languages which differ in expressivity and ease of use. Central to these languages is that they come with a formal semantics, expressed in model-theoretic terms, which enables access to implicit knowledge by automated reasoning. Progress in the adoption of reasoning for ontology languages in practice is currently being made, but several obstacles remain to be overcome for wide adoption on the Web. In this project, we investigate the use of tractable and other ontology languages from several perspectives, with a focus on extending description logics based ontology languages around OWL with further capabilities, while staying tractable if possible. Some of the aspects considered include the integration of rules languages with OWL, paraconsistent and non-monotonic reasoning, ontology modeling advances in particular related to geoscience applications, and reasoning algorithms and tools.
