Why Choose the Combined B.S./M.S. Program?
The Department of Electrical Engineering offers a combined Bachelor of Science and Master of Science (B.S./M.S.) degree program, which allows you to earn both Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (EE) and Master of Science in Electrical Engineering degrees in five years. As of Fall 2020, up to nine semester credit hours of the 6000/7000 level semester courses may be double counted and applied toward both B.S. and M.S. degree requirements.
Academics and Curriculum
Program Requirements
- You must meet the degree requirements in both respective degree programs.
- Use three graduate level electrical engineering courses (nine hours) toward both degree credit totals.
- Meet with an advisor to map degree completion for both degrees.
- Remain a full time student until you complete the master's degree.
Grades and Transcripts
Students in the combined program will have both a graduate and undergraduate transcript. Courses taken as a part of the combined program will appear on both undergraduate and graduate transcripts and GPAs for each level will be calculated separately. Relevant requirements related to GPA and eligibility apply.
Admission
If you are interested in pursuing the five-year combined BS/MS degrees, consult with your advisor for requirements, then submit an application to the Department of Electrical Engineering.
Requirements
You must meet the following requirements:
- Full time student
- Electrical Engineering major
- Cumulative undergraduate GPA of at least 3.3
- Complete at least 90-semester credits of 120-semester credits required for the BS degree
- Complete EE core courses with a minimum GPA of 3.3 over these core courses:
- EE 4000 - Discrete Linear Systems
- EE 3310 - Electronic Devices and Circuits
- EE 3450 - Introduction to Electromagnetics
Admission to the program will normally begin the next semester after approval. You will then have dual status as an undergraduate student and a pre-graduate student.
Tuition and Financial Aid
While in the combined program, you pay tuition at the undergraduate rate while enrolled as an undergraduate student. After earning the BSEE, you pay graduate tuition rates.
After admission, you are eligible to apply for a graduate assistantship. Admitted students are strongly encouraged to engage in research activities as early as possible.
Program Withdrawal
If you are admitted to the combined program, you may withdraw at any time and continue as a traditional undergraduate student. Graduate credits applied to the BSEE cannot be applied to a future graduate degree.
Program Dismissal
You may be dismissed from the combined program and continue as a traditional undergraduate student in the following situations:
- Failure to complete B.S. requirements with three years of admission
- Failure to maintain cumulative GPA of 3.0 in graduate courses
Graduate courses completed prior to dismissal may be used for the undergraduate program, but cannot be transferred to a future graduate degree.
