The short answer is it’s never too early. As your studies progress, chances are you’ll gain an understanding of what is of interest to you. Be curious, and investigate opportunities that intrigue you. We advise not waiting until your last year to start looking for an internship.

Although they are not mandatory, we highly recommend seeking an internship to sharpen your skills and put your knowledge to use. he sooner you begin looking, the better the fit will be to match your personal goals.

The total process—finding an internship and applying and interviewing for it—can take several weeks or even months. Here is a general timeline to assist you with the planning process:

1

Three semesters before you want to begin your internship:

  • Start doing some research. Consult with your peers, professors, and the Career Hub to discover what sort of internship would most benefit you and your future career. Attend job fairs and speak with people you know in the industry.
  • Determine your goals from this experience: Responsibilities? Compensation? New knowledge?
  • Define what sort of industry interests you: Corporation? Industry? Non-profit?

Planning ahead is key to landing an experience that supports your goals. Some opportunities are posted several months ahead of time, so start your research well in advance (three semesters) instead of waiting until the month you wish to begin.

2

Two semesters before you want to begin your internship:
