Curricular Advising Policies

Transfer Students/AP Credit

  1. EGR 1010
    1. If a student has completed all second year required courses in the ME or MSE program and has completed the WSU core (38 hours) then the EGR 1010 requirement will be waived.
  2. Missing prerequisites due to different paths at other institutions.
    1. Each course in the MME department has an assigned course coordinator. These coordinators are responsible for assessing:
      1. equivalence of transferred courses to the MME equivalent
      2. satisfaction of the prerequisite materials for the course when prerequisite equivalents are not uniquely identified.
        1. E.g.: A group of courses elsewhere may be assessed to meet the prerequisite requirements to a Wright State course by appropriate prerequisite content assessment.

Prerequisite waiving

  1. Prerequisites are only waived in extraordinary circumstances. Examples of extraordinary circumstances are:
    1. Failure of a course to be offered per the program plan
      1. Course offerings are forecast 3 years out while program guides provide a 4-year forecast. If students do not follow the standard schedule shown in the 4-year program of study they are expected to work around planned offerings to graduate in time.
    2. Changes in prerequisites.
      1. Curriculum improvement is a constant process and includes changes in prerequisites. Students are expected to adapt to a prerequisite change as below:
        1. The student has two full academic year semesters to adapt for one additional prerequisite if the student has two full academic year semesters in which to adapt
        2. The student has one additional semester for each additional course prerequisite change.
      2. Prerequisite changes made include effective dates and transition plans submitted with the change through the university curricular process. The academic advisor is aware of these plans.
    3. Outstanding students on an accelerated pace.
      1. Students in dual majors should consult the academic advisor for course planning.
      2. Students with a demonstrated capability of excellence, for instance, a GPA greater than 3.8 while consistently completing a full course load per the program of study may petition the chair for pre-requisite waivers. The chair will consult instructors of the prior related courses as well as the instructor of the course requiring the prerequisite. Only with the agreement of the chair, instructor, and course coordinator will a petition be approved.  The outcome of the petition and the basis for the decision will be recorded in the student’s academic folder.

Enrolling in courses at other institutions while enrolled at Wright State

  1. Taking courses elsewhere to apply towards your program of study requires prior department approval. At a minimum, approval requires that:
    1. The course is not available/offered at Wright State
    2. If the course is offered, there are no available seats.
    3. The student acted in good faith to register and stay registered for the course or the student added him/herself to the waitlist as soon as possible.
    4. The course conflicts with another course, both being necessary for degree completion with no other possible scheduling solution being available
    5. The course is approved as an adequate substitution by the chair
      1. Note that this assessment is not fixed and may change each term as both the local and external course may have changed.
      2. Additional individual approvals may be necessary (faculty, program director, etc.)
    6. Prerequisites for our nominally equivalent course have been met, regardless of listed prerequisites elsewhere.
  2. Failure to obtain prior approval will result in the necessity of petitioning for consideration towards your degree program.
    1. For the petition to succeed, approval of the must be obtained by
      1. Your advisor
      2. The chair
      3. The petitions committee
    2. To petition, write a letter, addressed to the chair, documenting both your performance and the justification for your inability to notify the department prior to registering for the course elsewhere.

Submission deadlines

To accurately process requests and assure that they are completed on time, the department has set the following requirements for submitted documents:

  1. The following documents take 10 days to process:
    1. Graduate program of study changes
    2. Reduced course load
    3. Requests to take courses at another institution/SOCHE forms
    4. Petitions to the chair
      1. Petitions to the chair must include a specific statement of:
        1. The person or persons whose decision you disagree with
        2. The specific decision that they made which you disagree with.
        3. The specific policy or practice you believe they have failed to comply with
        4. The substantive loss you incur due to the decision
        5. The remedy which you are requesting
  2. The following requirements for completion of forms:
    1. Changes of graduate program must be submitted at least one week prior to the beginning of the new semester if you will be registering for courses not on your program of study
    2. Internship for Technical Elective and 4+1 applications are due to the department by the deadline posted by the department office each semester. No exceptions are made to these deadlines.

Graduate Student Program of Study

  1. Graduate Programs of Study must be approved before a student will be allowed to register for their second semester.
  2. Graduate Programs of Study may take up to 10 days for approval. Turning it in early and being accurate is critical to ensure timely registration.
  3. Graduate student registration is pinned subject to having an approved program of study on file.
  4. Classes registered for prior to being part of an approved program of study will not count towards the degree. This means that interest in taking a course must be expressed by submitting a new program of study well in advance of the semester the course is offered to assure that it will count.
  5. Program of study checks:
    1. The program of study must meet the program requirements for your track and degree.
    2. All courses listed must be available according to the planning guide during the semester in which you plan on taking the class.
    3. 6xxx and 7xxx level prerequisites for all courses on your program must also be part of your program of study unless explicitly waived.
    4. Independent study and thesis:
      1. Independent study and thesis may not be listed on your program of study without the thesis of independent study advisor’s signature on the appropriate form.
      2. This agreement must be turned in with the modified program of study prior to registration for thesis or independent study.
  6. Thesis credit requirements
    1. At the discretion of the advisor, a student may apply three (3) credits of Independent Study plus six (6) credits of Thesis to fulfill the nine (9) hour thesis requirement if the Independent Study and Thesis are conducted with the same advisor.

Internship for Technical Elective Credit Policies

  1. Students must have completed all first and second year courses courses listed on the program guide.
  2. Students must work a minimum of 30 hours a week at their internship for a total of 450 hours for the semester.
  3. Students can receive internship credit for a technical elective only once. Students cannot receive TE credit for both an internship and an independent study. They must choose one or the other.

Other General Policies (Undergraduate and Graduate)

  1. The MME Department does not accept any online courses from other institutions. Only online courses taken at Wright State University can be counted in the program.
  2. Students will not be allowed to add MME courses after the 2nd week of the term even if instructor permission is granted. Students should register for classes on time and have a viable schedule in place before the semester starts.  It is the responsibility of the student to check course prerequisites before registering for classes.
  3. Other Registration Policies
    1. Students are expected to register only for courses for which they have the prerequisites or a reasonable expectation of having the prerequisite completed prior to starting the course.
      1. To enable flexibility for a wide variety of circumstances, the department does not block registration in courses that students do not have the prerequisites. However, the department will check the prerequisites of registrants and will demand proof of prerequisite completion or force-drop students as appropriate.
    2. Students may not be simultaneously registered for the same course for summer and fall semesters. Students who do so may be dropped from either section at the discretion of his chair or delegate in order to maintain opportunities for students with need.
    3. Students may not be simultaneously registered for courses that conflict in time. Students who do so may be dropped from the conflicting ME courses. This policy also applies to a course being taken at another institution that is in conflict with an ME course taken at Wright State.
  4. ME 4910 and ME 4920 must be taken sequentially. These courses are only open to seniors during their final year of coursework. Students who do not successfully complete ME 4910 or 4920 must start the sequence over with ME 4910. ME 4910/4920 cannot be transferred in from another institution.
